Competition Judge

Dave Bennett

With 226 entries, this was a daunting competition to judge. There were quite a number of images that, to me at least, the entrant failed to produce an image or images that met the theme. These were easy to eliminate. I went through the large number that remained, eliminating images that I felt were less strong. When I got to the last 40 images, this is where things started to get difficult. A large number of these, which I had to discard, certainly met the theme in a strong way, but I had to be ruthless in order to get to my final ten. I have ended up with a 1-2-3 and in addition, seven Highly Commended images.

I have been interested in photography since I was 16 or 17 in the early 1970s. During the days of film in the 70s, 80s, and 90s I was a keen darkroom worker.
These days, it is all digital and I use Olympus/OM System equipment. I enjoy many genres of photography but my favourites are Architecture, Abstract and Landscape. I am always looking out for unusual or off-beat subjects to photograph. I prefer to keep my subjects simple.
I enjoy club photography and I am involved in the running of Cwmbran Photographic Society here in South East Wales. I have been a Welsh Photographic Federation judge since around 2000. Judging has taken me to most of the clubs in South East Wales and I thoroughly enjoy seeing the work of other photographers and to critique their images.

Lessons Beyond Generations

Debashis Mukherjee

First Prize

A deceptively simple image, which ticks all the boxes for me. Two generations of widely differing ages but sharing modern technology in the form of a laptop computer. There are no unwanted distractions and the position of the budgerigar adds a touch of humour. I love this image.

Festive Mood

Rajesh Dhar

Second Prize

This is a very joyful image. Although possibly posed, it shows how music, albeit from a homemade instrument, unites the generations. The lovely expressions on both the father’s face and the girl’s faces made me smile. The inclusion of the animals and some of their environment added important interest.

Great Granddaughter; My Emily

Catherine Lee-Smith

Third Prize

This is rather different. I like the use of a composite to convey the ‘Generations’ theme with Granny, Grandpa, and granddaughter. The inclusion of the angel wings suggest that the former are no longer of this life but are fondly remembered. I particularly like the rather ragged way that the image is composed.

Moment of Emotion

Pranab Basak

Commended

There is a lot of joy between the generations coming through in this image. The expression on the face of the elderly woman is wonderful.

Happy Generations

I love to see people engaged in things they do on an everyday basis in images. As well as showing a lovely family group, something about their life and environment is on show.

Happy Hours

This is another fun image. The expression on the boys’ faces is lovely and the mask on (presumably) the father adds an original and a comical feel.

Helping Hand

Partha Pratim Saha

I love the natural feel to this image and that the adults are doing something whilst the children compliment the composition well.

The Old and the New

The props (the two cameras) are important elements in this image. Photography links the two generations that are depicted.
